Part 3: ADHD Testing at Monarch Counseling: Assessing Children and Adults for ADHD
In considering symptoms of ADHD, assessments can begin for children who are at least four years of age. Prior to that age, it is often difficult to determine which symptoms may be considered part of normal development. Also, prior to four years of age, most children may not have had experiences in multiple settings, such as in school, with sports, and within other community settings to have enough information to determine the impact of symptoms on functioning in multiple environments.
ADHD Testing at Monarch Counseling: Telehealth or Face-to-Face Testing?
Face-to-face sessions are preferred for children, especially those under the age of 10. Research has indicated there can be difficulties with using Telehealth evaluations with younger children. Also, a face-to-face session allows for the advantage to make observations of a child and allows for natural interactions with a child. During a Telehealth session, it would not be possible to observe anything off camera, such as other body movements, including but not limited to fidgeting and movements of the lower body. Natural interactions can also allow for a clinician to observe how a child may interact within an environment, including how they may organize tasks and activities.
ADHD Testing at Monarch Counseling: Adult ADHD Testing
Assessment for adults may be conducted face-to-face or via Telehealth; however, there may be a strong preference for the patient to have a face-to-face versus a Telehealth session. This information also provides data for the therapist associated with learning styles for working memory. Preferences for session types can be discussed within the assessment in the context of symptoms of ADHD. When testing is conducted over more than one session, some adults may request a hybrid approach with one Telehealth and one face-to-face session. If you are considering a Telehealth ADHD assessment, be sure to check with your insurance policy to ensure Telehealth is covered on your plan.
